...wegen Brot... VOTBM's 2nd offering on CMP is an exceptional mosaic textually composed of innumerable cross-references drawn from literature. They treat the chosen poems of writers like Peter O'Hara, W.S. Mervin or Theodore Roethke as their music leading to the creation of the linguistic equivalent of a tone-poem. In a humoresque manner ...wegen Brot... shifts from adaptations of the Italian Opera Buffo to collective modulations of familiar musical parameters into their own unique style: FREE POP.
The new album...wegen Brot... was nearly two years in the making. CMP's sound-engineer Walter Quintus as a violinist became the fifth member of the ensemble. Zaire-origin drummer & percussionist Marc Lehan joined in for some tunes and the well-know German film-dub voice of Rolf Schult is featured with a poem by Charles Baudelaire.
VOTBM's unique sonic adventures led to an invitation to perform live at KLANGART 95, Germany bi-annual leading festival for abstract and pioneering music on June 10th, 1995.
OPSCENE 8-9/95
Hübsch respektlos vor allem was einengt; schön verwirrend für alle, die nur das Gradlinige goutieren - und wundersam musikalisch, was die deutsche Formation VOTBM hier auf ihrem zweiten Album an ästhetischer Rauhbeinigkeit inszeniert. HIFI VISION 11/95
VOTBM call the style 'free pop', and though there's not much in the way of Verse/chorus structure, there are plenty of hooks and great noises. Whenever things get to wild, there's usually a rhythm guitarist to hand, dying to get back into a groove. THE WIRE 8/95
EBM 12/95
Simultaneously sweet and subversive CMJ 11/95
DISCOVER 7-8/95
