Formed in 1974, Cleveland's Styrenes merged raw, aggressive rock ( soon to be called "punk") with bits of jazz, prog-rock, free improvisation and a knack for infectious, classical tuneful pop. Styrenes Co-founder Paul Marotta never dissolved the group, and this LP offers its first new material in a decade. The songs are mostly driving, mid-tempo rockers fronted by Marotta's thundering piano, UK Rattay's abrasive guitar and singer Mike Hudson's frayed, nicotine-stained voice. The band's mix of punk grit, smart soncraft and Hudson's gutter poet narratives often recalls the original Patti Smith Group. A singular slab of taut, angry elegance, this is an impressive return of a remarkable band. CHICAGO TRIBUNE April 26, 1998
The Styrenes have produced a literate, yet totally unpretentious honest-to-fuckin'-God great art record, or rock record, or art-rock record, whatever ya wanna call it. They care and you should too. LOLLIPOP MAGAZINE 43/98
Flag Waving: The wonderfully titled 'We care, so you don't have to' marks a rare yet rich continuation of the Styrenes' imposing legacy. BILLBOARD February 14, 1998
As a rule, musical envelope-pushers burn out (or fade away) after just a few years of rocking the boat, but even after more than two decades, The Styrenes still have plenty of tricks up their sleeves. It's cathartic music for the mind and body. REQUEST 6/98
Pointed, driving rock'n'roll that maintains an energy level other ´90s band are lucky even to approach. MAGNET No.33/98
Another important Cleveland band are The Styrenes, whose manic mix of unfettered rock action and gritty dialogue set them apart from the more experimental Pere ubu and Electric Eels. TOP 6/98
