Kurzbio:

Restless World

Marcio about his work:
This suite for six wind players and percussion is conceived as a platform for exploration of structures containing composed material and improvisation. The unusual sound of this septet - with its chamber ensemble quality - is enhanced by the inclusion of electronic processing done by Walter Quintus, co-producer and an instrumental partner in the realisation of this album.

As an instrumentalist, Marcio doesn't restrict to playing with sticks and/or brushes but utilises all kinds of beaters (some of them even self-made) and hand drumming techniques acquired through his studies of different ethnic music traditions. In his own words: "I think the most rewarding listening is achieved when the suite is heard in its complete form".

Primal Soils: It starts as a prologue to the suite with an a cappella introduction "sung" by the wind instruments where the soprano saxophone, having the lead voice, somehow invites the listener to join the adventure. From this point onwards the characters of the story start introducing themselves at times in the form of an unaccompanied solo and at times interacting with the others. After the presentation of the main theme we hear right away an intense soprano sax solo played by Christof Lauer - who barely needs an introduction, being one of the most accomplished saxophone players in Europe today. After reaching a peak, the plot continues organically onto a percussion solo by M. Doctor exploring the space with his palette of colours with hands and sticks. Then the ensemble joins back in with a hymn-like recapitulation of the theme while the warm orchestration of the septet sets up the mood of things to come. Quoting Marcio: "This is a piece dedicated to my long-time friends Marcelo Moguilevsky and Cesar Lerner - two well established composers and instrumentalist from Buenos Aires - with whom I took my first steps into collective improvisation and worked on developing the sound of a group - during the years of performing and recording with the group Comedia. Although it doesn't resemble any traditional folkloric form, this piece puts somehow the 6/8 rhythm - typical in Argentinian music - under a different light."

Restless World: Out of a cloud of sound evolves the next movement which gives title to the album. A tour the force in exploration of textural colour, constantly changing meter and polyrhythmic tension. The structure of this piece shows, as Marcio says, "a cinematic treatment" - inspired by the image editing procedures uses in video and film. In this way the soloists emerge out of the ensemble, each backed up by a different scenery between the fragments of the actual theme, which is played only once in its entirety at the end of the piece. About the solos... a fierce tenor sax solo, again by the virtuoso Christof Lauer, a flugelhorn solo by Ingolf Burkhardt and then a percussion solo. The different layers and colours of low drums and gongs take us to a dark and deep dimension suggesting what could be a ritual dance of some tribe yet to be discovered. After the main theme is resumed, the bridge to the next movement is laid by the bass trombonist Lucas Schmid, taking the part of a storyteller sharing with us some comments about what has happened so far.

The Unique Wind: The main voice here is the unmistakable trumpet of Reiner Winterschladen. The combination of bass clarinet, muted trumpet and darbuka (a goblet shaped hand drum with its origin in the Arabic world) characterises this piece as the three-note-motives dance with each other over the pulse of five beats per measure. After the mischievous trumpet solo by Reiner Winterschladen and the introspective tenor sax cadence by Christof Lauer, a new theme is introduced interwoven with the bass clarinet line. In Marcio´s own words:..." This piece was inspired by the memories of the feeling of the wind blowing against my face as I used to walk along the south Atlantic coast of Argentina during my childhood. The unique wind is for me an image that symbolises the inner motor that source of inspiration that motivates us to create and to change. It was as well the first piece written for this ensemble".

Sombras del regreso: This composition sets a framework for the ensemble to explore the thematic material by means of free counterpoint. Different views are shared and different layers are created when smaller groups into the ensemble are formed to tell their own views of the story.

Playground in the Dark: Yet another compositional approach, in this case the soloists are: Reiner Winterschladen with an intimate trumpet introduction, Lutz Büchner on clarinet, later joined by Marcio Doctor and Walter Quintus - on electronics - in a mysterious trio. Steffen Schorn follows on bass flute and leads us to the final "carrousel" section and a new cloud of sound that serves somehow as an epilogue to the suite.
